Paterson Joseph

The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho

Join Paterson Joseph, one of Britain’s best-loved actors for a special event in Black History month, where he will read extracts from and discuss his debut historical novel.

The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho is based on the true story of the man born on a slave ship who went on to be a writer, leading abolitionist and the first Black Briton known to have voted in an election. Paterson will be in conversation with Sofia Akel.

Paterson Joseph recently starred in Vigil and Noughts + Crosses. He also featured in Peep Show and Law & Order: UK and he plays Arthur Slugworth in the forthcoming Wonka movie.

‘An absolutely thrilling, throat-catching wonder of a historical novel… Told in wonderful prose and with dazzling energy and brilliant panache. Hugely recommended.’ Stephen Fry

Sofia Akel is an award-winning cultural historian, creative consultant, writer, host and lecturer specialising in Black British history. She is also the founder of the non-profit, Free Books Campaign which gets books to those who can’t afford or access them for free. In 2022 she became one of 30-under-30 in the Guap x Adidas Blacklist.
