Belief in the Age of Uncertainty

Lamorna Ash & Abi Millar

In an era of disconnection and apathy, what does it mean to believe and why are so many drawn to meaning, connection, and ritual within and beyond religion?

From attending a silent Jesuit retreat along the Welsh coastline to receiving a shamanistic healing to delving into astrology, this conversation will unpack the fascinating, unexpected and enlightening stories of two writers who sought to understand the enduring appeal religion and spirituality – by experiencing it for themselves.

After hearing of a stand-up double act she knew from university who had left comedy behind for the priesthood, Lamorna Ash embarked on a journey across Britain to understand what was driving young people to embrace Christianity. Insightful and deeply personal, this book is not only an investigation into the multiplicity of faith but a heartfelt exploration of young adulthood and the challenge of finding your place in the world. Abi Millar grew up in an evangelical church, but after losing her faith she sought spirituality in other places. In the wake of a great loss, she sought to place her own crisis in faith inside a larger story of spirituality, trying these practices for herself and embracing what ritual can offer.

Lamorna and Abi will be in conversation with Elizabeth Briggs, editorial director at Saqi Books, literary programmer and writer whose work explores Britain’s lost faiths.

‘Offers scintillating insight into how faith works in an age of intense self-fashioning.’
