Jacqueline Crooks in conversation with Alex Wheatle
Fire Rush

Drawing on stories of aspiration, love and music, Jacqueline Crooks’ electrifying debut is an unforgettable portrait of Black womanhood which is as relevant to today’s social injustices as the era it depicts.
This conversation with author Alex Wheatle will explore the intimate connection between music and story, how it informs both of their works and how south London’s often hidden and untold music scenes relate to a community’s identity, sense of place, history and activism.
Fire Rush was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and chosen as The Observer‘s best debut of the year. Alex Wheatle is a writer whose life was recently depicted in Steve McQueen’s award-winning TV series, Small Axe, focusing on Black British history.
