Students experience university at BookFest open day
On Wednesday 22 May, we welcomed over four hundreds students to the University of Roehampton to experience undergraduate lives for themselves, on our annual Introduction to University Day.
In partnership with the University of Roehampton, BookFest invited over four hundred students from local comprehensives, Ursuline High School, Rutlish, Ricards Lodge, Wimbledon College and Southfields Academy to explore the campus, talk to current students and hear from a fantastic line-up of authors and professors.
Students had the opportunity to hear from leading Roehampton academics and authors in fields such as Law, Psychology and Business and were able to explore university facilities including the state-of-the-art Mary Seacole Health Innovation Centre and the mock courtroom.
BookFest provided an unmissable billing of authors- Tatton Spiller, founder of Simple Politics which has helped millions of young people to engage with politics; Subhadra Das, writer, historian and comedian who discussed her new book Uncivilised; Dr Kathryn Harkup, well-known science communicator who uses references to popular culture to explain chemistry; and Nicky Hayes, President of the British Psychological Society who was fundamental in the advancement of Psychology as a pre-university subject.
In addition to the talks and campus tours, each student was given a book from one of the authors they had heard from.
