Sharing the love of story-writing
Last month Wimbledon BookFest brought leading children’s authors Eve Wersocki-Morris and Nathanael Lessore to schools in the borough, for two inspirational sessions focusing on creative writing.
The workshops were run as part of the Wimbledon BookFest’s Young Writers Competition and gave local students from both primary and secondary schools the opportunity to explore and develop their creative writing skills.
In addition to the workshops, each pupil received a free signed book from the author.
One of the teachers said; “Introducing our children to an author is a brilliant experience, where they could see all the hard work was for a purpose. The classes were buzzing with activity during and after the sessions. Children were keen to complete their stories and to share these with others.”
Wimbledon BookFest’s year-round education programme enables over 10,000 children and young people from local schools across the borough to take part in projects focused on literacy. By providing workshops, author talks and school events, as well as providing free books for school children, BookFest aims to nurture a love of reading and inspire the next generation of writers.
Already this year, the BookFest schools programme has included three fantastic World Book Day events from best-selling authors Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Kevin and Katie Tsang and Tọlá Okogwu.
The writing workshops were run in partnership with Merton Libraries, supported by Arts Council England.
