Sebastian Barry

Former Irish Laureate

Book tickets

Sebastian Barry is a literary giant. The 2018–21 Laureate for Irish Fiction, he is the only novelist to win the Costa Book of the Year award twice, and his work has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Along the way he has collected the Walter Scott Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and a devoted readership across Ireland, the UK and beyond.

His latest novel, The Newer World, returns to the vivid nineteenth-century landscape of Days Without End and A Thousand Moons, following freed man Tennyson Bouguereau on a journey from Tennessee to Nashville and an unexpected turn to Victorian England in search of meaning and belonging. Lyrical and visceral, it is an immersive, unforgettable story of one man’s life in the aftermath of the American Civil War, and of what it means to survive and what might be lost along the way.

‘Nobody writes like, nobody takes risks like, nobody pushes the language, and the heart, and the two together, quite like Sebastian Barry does.’
Ali Smith

Sebastian will be talking to broadcaster, presenter and book-lover Simon Savidge.
