There are many ways to tell a story. In our opening event we introduce two Wimbledon based visual artists who are integral to this year’s festival. Both tell stories through symbol and image.
Mary Owusu-Hirsch draws on Ghanaian Adinkra symbolism in her portraits. Her recent exhibition, Trailblazers, showed at the Africa Centre in London and comes to the Norman Plastow Gallery, Wimbledon Museum this October (15–30 October).
Mahin Hussain, BookFest’s programme cover artist, takes inspiration from Pakistani truck art. A visual and print designer, she trained at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi and London College of Fashion, and her work was commissioned for sale alongside the V&A’s recent Mughal exhibition.
