The theme for this year's Big Cat writing competition is Animal Olympics, and the deadline for entries is Friday, 2nd March 2012. The competiton is open to all Year 5 and Year 6 students in the Merton borough.
Entries can be either poetry or prose, and all entries should be sent to:

BookFest have organised a series of events around World Book Day on Thursday 1 March to co-incide with the launch of their 2012 Young Writers' Competition. The them this year is both Dickens and Olympic inspired: Great Expectations.
Students of all ages are encourage to take part. You can hear last year's winners below.
We have a series of schools events taking place around World Book Day, including Cressida Cowell, author of the 'How to Train Your Dragon' books appearing at Polka Theatre on 29th February, and the Alien Invaders, who will be appearing at Merton and Mitcham Schools on 1st March.

Many thanks to everyone who entered the Wimbledon BookFest Young Writers' Competition this year. We had a record number of entries from schools all across the borough of Merton.
There will be a series of events themed to tie in with the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth. This year's Young Writers' Competition is entitled Great Expectations. More information will follow...watch this space!

The winninng entries have also been published in a book. You can download the pdf file of it here, and the cover here. Put them together, and you can print yourself a lovely copy.
2011 YOUNG WRITERS’ COMPETITION The Great Escape A record number of schools took part and the winners will attend prize givings in October. Faber have kindly donated copies of the centenary anniversary edition of Lord of the Flies by William Golding for secondary school prize winners. The winning entries will once again be recorded by actors and also published this year.
World Book Day
This year’s World Book Day was even more exciting than usual, as our event not only included chair of Rachel Russell and official author Betty Birney, but also a visit from HRH Camilla Duchess of Cornwall. Pupils gathered from surrounding schools at Wimbledon Chase to listen to Betty describe her adventures with Humphrey the hamster, before a reading from HRH of Winnie the Pooh.
Bookfest Free Books Initiaitve
As part of our commitment to literacy and the enjoyment of books for all we have launched a new scheme to fund books for children in the most deprived areas. The books are given at author events in schools for those in most need socio-economically.
